Do your thing, Chicken Wing

Do your thing, Chicken Wing

For Christmas, I got an air fryer from MIL. I’ve been wanting one for a long time, but I wasn’t sure if it was just the next “raved and forgotten” kitchen device or if it would raise my electricity bill. #beinganadultsucks

I am here to tell you that the air fryer is a MUST! I was really nervous about using it for the first time and didn’t want to waste my first recipe on a Pinterest fail, so I waited about 2 weeks before I decided on sweet potato fries. It seems like these days, restaurants always upcharge you if you ask for sweet potato fries over regular fries. I love sweet potatoes, so that’s not cool in my book. They turned out great! And they were definitely a confidence booster to try more things.

I’m not a recipe blogger, but I do like to adapt things to my own liking. I study a bunch of different recipes for the same thing and then decide what I want to do. THIS is my version of the best air fried chicken wings!

THE BEST AIR-FRIED CHICKEN WINGS & RUB

IMG_1395.JPG

I’m still working through the exact ratios for our homemade rub, but this is what I used last night. It actually made Ben say more than “Yep. It’s good.” 🤣 He kept going on about how it didn’t even need sauce or anything!

We stir all of these seasonings together in a small bowl:

  • 1/3 cup of brown sugar (lightly packed)

  • 1 1/2 tsp of sea salt

  • 1/2 Tbsp of onion powder

  • 1 Tbsp of smoked paprika

  • 1 1/2 tsp of garlic powder

  • 1 1/2 tsp of black pepper

  • A dash of chili powder (just a little bit!)

I wash and pat dry the chicken wings so the seasonings really cling to the chicken skin. We throw all of the wings/drums into a gallon-sized ziploc bag with the seasoning dumped in. And you know the next step: SHAKE IT BABY! SHAKE IT! 💃🕺🧂

Waylin helped me with the shaking. It was…so helpful. 😂

She’s been LOVING having her hair in pigtails the last few days. She shakes her head back and forth and says “shake piggies” 🐖 #shesthebest

After you pickup the [hopefully sealed] bag of “shook” wings your toddler threw on the floor ( 🤣 ), I preheat my air fryer at 380 degrees for 5 minutes with a slight spray of non-stick oil. I don’t think this step is necessary, because it’s going to stick no matter what, but it actually comes off very easily (even without oil) due to the coating on the air fryer’s basket/base.

I then lay enough wings into the basket of the air fryer without any overlapping and set it for 20 minutes at 380 degrees. At the 10 minute mark, I flip the wings over and put them back in. I would say at the 6-8 minutes remaining mark, I start shaking and checking them. I usually pull out at the 2 minute mark to see a perfect batch of juicy chicken wings with a crisp skin bathed in a sweet and smokey rub. 🤤

This was my first batch ever, but last night’s (with Waylin’s help) were the best YET! No picture because Ben and I scarfed them down! Isn’t it crazy how they look like they have been grilled?

I highly recommend getting an air fryer and trying these out! ❤
