You'll Never Regret Time Spent Fishing With Your Dad

I could be wrong, but I don’t have any memories fishing with my dad. Maybe he didn’t know how to fish? Or maybe he didn’t think that’s something that a dad does with his daughter? 🤷‍♀️ I’m so happy that Ben doesn’t worry about those stereotypes when it comes to fishing. Catching dinner should never be genderized. 🎣

The picture above was a spur of the moment decision to cast a line during a tornado warning! 🌪 That’s in true Bohlen fashion! I remember when Ben and I were dating way back in the day as young kids. I went with him to pick up a pitbull puppy. I should really say “rescue” because the house we picked up the puppy from was clearly not a good environment. I’ll never forgot the mama pitbull jumping and crying when they handed us one of her babies. 😥

The true is, that puppy was far too young to be away from its mom. We didn’t really know that at the time, so we tried our best to comfort the puppy. One night, a big storm rolled in with tornadoes. Ben told me to hop in the truck and I said “what about this puppy?” He said he would be fine in the hallway. I was so confused because why would we be leaving our house during a tornado? To this day, I can’t remember if I forced him to take the puppy with us or not, but I do remember him pulling into his parent’s house where they were just chilling on the porch watching the trees blow sideways while the tornado sirens were going off. I asked his mom, “Are we going to take shelter soon?” and she just laughed.

The Bohlens are natural “stormchasers” and love to watch a good storm. Growing up as a townie, I feel like we always took cover. It wasn’t until I had that experience with Ben’s family that I stopped doing that. And just because we’re on the topic of storms and taking cover…there is a time where I was home alone with my two dogs (Lexi and Teddie). My then-boyfriend was at work and the tornado sirens were going off. Judy Fraser, a local weather lady legend, was urging everyone on the TV to take cover NOW. I called my then-boyfriend and asked he thought I should or get the dogs and sit in the bathroom. He told me I should, especially because the power was flickering. I decided to get some candles out and put those on while I kept watching the news.

As I was sitting there, I started getting really hot. I looked over at my dogs to see if they were hot/panting too. Maybe the AC kicked off? I decided to shed my sweatshirt and as I started to pull it off my head, I look over and see A HUUUGE ASS FIRE 🔥 that was traveling down a cord to the wall! I ran to get water in a mixing bowl to throw on it. The outlet was starting to go black. I was able to put it out with tons of water…somehow the candles I was burning caught a speaker wire on fire. It was not fun explaining to anyone, including the landlord what happened. I had my candle privileges taken away after that and honestly, I’ve never gotten them back…I don’t fuck with candles anymore.

Waylin finally upgraded to being able to hold her own pole! Ben was busy catching all the fish, so I had to show Waylin how to bait the hook and reel in the line. I did the casting for her, but she took over on everything else and was really content constantly reeling in as soon as she had the pole back from me. I think patience and fishing come with age…lol.

As you can imagine, she REALLY loved holding the worms. She will tell you that’s her favorite part of fishing! I got really good at baiting hooks with crickets (especially dead ones), and I can hook a worm, but I hate how squirmy they get!

We tried to get her to hold the fish, but she was more interested in petting them like a dog! 🤣 It’s pretty cool that we get to have these kinds of days from our backyard. She was really sad when Ben let the fish go. 🐟

I hope these two get to create many more memories together and come home with all the fisherman’s tales! ❤
